WHAT CAUSES INSOMNIA?
Causes are many but underlying each one of them is the overactive mind; the mind that behaves like a mad monkey, ceaselessly chattering, not able to be quiet for even a moment.
Sometimes the thoughts are just clinging to this theme and that, nothing important really, just endless babble.
Such a mind is like an untrained horse going wherever it wants to, heedless of the rider’s commands. Or it could be that life’s events have thrown up a big one, which seems far too important for us to stop thinking about it, even for a moment.
Winston Churchill, the great war-time prime minister of England, slept only 2 to 3 hours a night, the burden of leadership throwing up one great plan after another for his fertile mind to consider. What to do? When to act? What if they..?
And of course we might fall into a moral or even an existential crisis where confusion, catastrophic thinking, fear and uncertainty roam free. Who am I really? What if I cease to exist or worse still, go mad? Will I wake up terrified again or have the same nightmare of killing someone? Does not being able to sleep mean I’m getting worse? How will I cope tomorrow? We experience a mind which is stuck in quicksand, lost in a thick fog,
assailed on all sides by an awful sense of danger.
