Sometimes the heart is aching so much that our thoughts keep returning to what has been lost. Nights are often the hardest, seemingly endless before the dawn finally comes. Perhaps we feel we are alone, alone with our thoughts which are drawn to the sorrow-filled pain like a mother to the cry of a child. When we observe Nature we can see that what seems to be a great loss is really a new beginning, the beginning of a new growth, of transformation. The ripe fruit which falls to the ground and rots is an essential step in the process of regeneration. Seeds sprout and eventually grow into new trees. We are Nature too. ‘We are Nature’s way of looking at itself’, wrote the American seer, Henry Thoreau. So it follows that all of our loss and suffering must also have a higher purpose.

The gaining of such perennial wisdom is like putting on clear-glass spectacles instead of ones so darkened that all the world seems grey.

As the great Lebanese poet, Kahil Gibran, once wrote, ‘Your pain is the breaking of the shell which encloses your understanding.’ Accepting this as a truism we can affirm, “Yes, Yes, Yes” as our tears run down. Through our pain we learn that nothing is ever really lost or gone from us. What remains is the essence, the unchanging fundamental, that which is ever peaceful, ever joyful, ever full.

The ripe sugar cane is burned, cut, crushed and then dried. After all of these ordeals what remains is sugar so sweet. It was always there, hidden within the tough skin of the cane, waiting for the traumas which would release it. We too can profit from the hammer blows of fate, rediscovering the heart of a sweet child within.
