RELEASE FROM STRESS - double CD set

A few decades ago some neuro-physiologists discovered that our nervous system is of two basic types: one which activates, and one which prepares the whole system for rest, contemplation and sleep. The activating one prepares us for ‘fight or flight’ and is triggered by what is called the Reticular Activating System (or RAS) in the brain.
When the RAS is not receiving much input it gives off reassuring messages to say, ‘There is no danger now. It is safe to remain still and have rest.’ However if the RAS is always being inundated with inputs of alarm, it gives off signals that say to the body/mind complex, ‘Be on guard! Danger is at hand! On no account must you cease being vigilant about the outside world. This is not a time to rest or sleep.’ And so sleep, of course, refuses to come.

Living our lives in a stressful way continually bombards the RAS with alarming news until it is on permanent red alert. Then, even though we yearn to let go into sleep, we cannot. When such is the case we need to de-stress our lives, change the way we act in and react to the world.

When you listen to the ‘Relief from Stress’ CDs a few times, and apply those tools which seem right for you, your body starts giving more realistic messages to the nervous system: ‘This body is not in danger. There is no urgency. Take it easy now.’ Then our amazing signaling box, the RAS, turns the house alarm off and the whole neighbourhood is able to get some rest.

On the CDs you’ll hear common sense reminders of what you already know to be true. To take but one example, we must never say ‘yes’ when we mean ‘no’. If we disregard this advice, perhaps many times in just one day, we end up on a treadmill which never slows down. How can we drift into sleep if we are full of resentment and worry about all of those times when we’ve not been true to ourselves?

So we can resolve to avoid saying yes when we mean no. This is just one of the many simple devices on the CDs for reducing the stress in our lives.
